WJEC GSCE

Why study French?

Are you aware that only 25% of the world’s population speak English? Therefore, studying a Modern Foreign Language will broaden your horizons and improve your communication skills. Many British people go on holiday to France or Spain and studying a GCSE will help you understand the traditions and culture of the country and will prepare you to deal with a variety of situations in the foreign language. Studying a language can reinforce your own language’s grammatical structures and as a result improve your understanding of your mother tongue.

Russell Group universities give priority to students who have a GCSE in a language for a variety of courses such as medicine. It is also possible to study a language alongside a scientific subject. According to many studies, knowledge of a foreign language increases earning potential between 8% and 20% and research shows that the importance of languages in the work place will increase following Brexit.

Studying a modern foreign language can lead to a variety of careers including journalism, law and education. Employers are eager to find multilingual workers and a foreign language is also beneficial in scientific fields, such as engineering and technology as there are many opportunities to work abroad.
