Assessment
Portfolio of course work.
Following a given brief, the course covers a range of research, drawing and design skills recorded in a personal sketchbook. The initial ideas are developed through a range of creative textile techniques including the use of fabric paints, dyes, pattern and print on fabric. In addition, surface decoration techniques are taught including applique, beading, quilting, computerised sewing machine and hand embroidery in order to create new surfaces. Some experimental techniques may involve working with plastics, metals and wires aswell as the exciting potential of transferring digital imagery and text onto fabrics to create highly original outcomes. The experimental work is submitted in the form of mounted design sheets which document the development of ideas undertaken to reach the final textile outcome. Pupils are required to use their personal sketchbook to record research, the work of contemporary designers and any visits to galleries museums.
Practical examination 40%
The examination period is completed during the spring term of year 11. Pupils must choose from a range of design briefs offered in the examination paper. They work independently to record and develop ideas working towards a final outcome through the medium of textiles, within a 10 Hour examination.
